Triptych 2

Abstract:

This is a triptych that allows you to load three different videos and to play them alongside each other in the 'same' movie. Each is controllable by the user.

This rhizome triptych allows you to load and play three videos simultaneously, all within a single QuickTime movie. The three files are loaded via an associated XML file (rhizome2.xml) where you enter the URL's of the videos you wish to load and play. A simple and ugly controller is available for each video pane, so that any of them can be played, paused, rewound and so on. (While ugly I have left it as is because in the past people have always assumed this sort of control over video and more abstract controllers, such as a simple square to play/pause, seems to have caused confusion, this could well be changing now.)

You could of course load the same material three times, different material, two the same, and so on. It lets you make more abstract relations between video fragments, and gives some of this autonomy to your users as well since they can now play and pause each of the videos as they wish. This, of course, completely stuffs up any traditional notion of cinematic duration and time, as such movies have no clear duration (how long is such a movie?, what does it mean to watch all of it?) and since there are now variable temporal relations between each video pane, there are multiple possible relations between video sequences.

To use download the zip archive, edit the XML file, and publish both the QuickTime movie and the XML file to the same directory. Load and play as usual. You cannot rename the XML file, but the QuickTime file can be renamed to whatever you like.
