Rhizome One: Two Loops

Abstract:

This is the first (and most basic) rhizome movie template. It allows you to place two different videos alongside each other. They will autoplay, and loop.

This first rhizome movie, "Two Loops" allows you to place two 320 x 240 pixel QuickTime compatible videos next to each other. Each will autoplay and loop. There is no control over the playback, nor sound. Which means:

  • If your videos have sound then both soundtracks will be heard simultaneously
  • The videos can be of different durations
  • The videos must be loaded (if you want to use this online) from a valid URL

This sort of video collage work is what Lev Manovich (in "The Language of New Media") has described as spatial montage. It is what I have described as 'softvideo'. The two videos could be unrelated, they could be sourced from elsewhere, they could be related in non narrative ways (one has vertical movement, the other horizontal, one upward, the other down, one predominantly orange the other blue, one a boy the other a girl, water and sky, and so on). The things you can make are probably not so much narrative as ambient video. Sort of things that lie part way between VJ and/or video art and traditional video/film (and video blog) practice. They are invitations to explore and create.

To use download the zip attachment, edit the included XML file and publish the mov file with the XML file (always in the same folder). You will also of course need to make sure the media your rhizome is using is available at a valid URL (which is what you should have entered into the XML file).

More help is in the FAQ.
