course description

Integrated Media One provides a detailed introduction to the creative and critical use of time based media online and networked theory and practice. This is done through the creation of a portfolio of small works online, and the creation of a major interactive online work. The course develops creative skills and critical thinking and expects you to become a producer of knowledge and content rather than a consumer.

objectives, learning outcomes & capability development

Students who successfully complete this course will be able to develop and publish time based media online, develop and publish online interactive projects, and have an understanding of the structure, nature and role of the internet as a networked environment.

overview of learning activities -

The major activities occur in lectures and workshops. Lectures will present key ideas and involve discussion, critique and questioning around problems of narrative, multilinearity and online media. The workshops will develop technical competencies in conjunction with the application of particular ideas. In all cases a combination of problem and process based learning methodologies will be used to help students to reflect on the activities undertaken and to develop explicit and tacit knowledge about online media.

overview of learning resources

All students will need access to their personal blog. Reference materials will be made available as required. Extensive use of online resources will be made.

overview of assessment

Link to first project - k-sketch film (pdf)

Assessment will consist of a small scale interactive work, participation, and the publication of an interactive project and accompanying essay.

Participation identifies your ability to undertake and achieve meaningful activities in relation to your learning in IM1. This constitutes 30% of your final result.

The research activity will require you to undertake a group interactive media project and to discuss this (in writing) theoretically. This constitutes 50% of your final result.

The small scale interactive work will allow you to demonstrate your technical skills and be able to discuss these in terms of theory and practice. This will constitute 20% of your final result.

learner activities

This course uses a combination of problem and process based learning. It involves working with video and audio online in blogs.

teaching schedule

There is no set lecture schedule as:

i. lectures are developed in response to student activities during the course

ii. some lectures are intended to be participative conversations rather than ‘lectures’ and so their content is student defined.

The labs are weekly and form an essential part of this course as this is where theory and making are most strongly connected through practice.

learning resources

A variety of notes, commentaries, references and stuff is available at http://vogmae.net.au/intmedia/

To be successful in this course students will need access to their student blog, email account, and their web site. A teaching blog will be provided that will collect and ‘republish’ relevant student material, as well as distribute appropriate learning resources. Regular reading of the blog at http://media.rmit.edu.au/mog is essential. Additional materials will be published via the Integrated Media site, and staff blogs.

assessment tasks

Your learning through this semester will be assessed through three major tasks or activities. In each of these you will be given the opportunity to experiment, and emphasis will be placed on how you went about defining and achieving your aims for these tasks.

Your participation will contribute 30% of your final mark. You will be required to complete a number of formal steps to define and document your participation, and this will let you then determine an overall grade for your semester’s participation. This will be evaluated in the last workshop of semester one.

A research task will be done. This will be mix of small group and individual activity. This research will require you to build an online work and apply a key theoretical idea to the consideration of this work. This will contribute 50% to your final result. This work will be assessed at the end of semester.

An interactive media work will be created. This will be an individual project that is built from media shared within a small group. The work will be published online . It will include a written explanation. This task will be submitted at the end of Week seven of semester. This will contribute 20% of your mark.

To see a description of the learning outcomes of each assessment task please refer to the document for each activity. All work will be assessed using RMIT’s standard grading scale.

other relevant information

There may arise occasions where the work that you undertake, including work that is submitted for assessment, may be quoted or commented upon by teaching staff in the course of their research. Permission to cite work will only be sought after all assessment tasks have been completed and individual permission will be sought in all instances. All such work will be appropriately acknowledged and cited, and if you wish it will not specifically identify you.
