The list of research topics and problems will grow. Some have been in touch concerned none quite appeal. Students who do a set topic have a better time of it than those that don’t, but if you are going to frame your own topic then:
- we are not spending time in semester working out if it is good, bad, or needs to change
- it must be relevant to your practice/field/discipline
- able to be evidenced
Honours is academic, not professional, research. Professional research is something everyone does. What variety of tomato will grow best in my backyard? What is the history of Fiji so I can write my novel set in Fiji. How many films are made in Australia each year? None of these are academic questions. The key difference is probably that none involve ‘why?”, they are only what questions. If your topic is only a ‘what’ then it will produce trivial work. A good research problem is a question you don’t know the answer to yet but you want to find out. It is an answer that you think will matter.
