Redistribution of Amateur Creativity into Professional Content

While adding an image into flickr today I noticed I had a couple of messages via flickr mail. One was the following:

Hi Adrian,

I am writing to let you know that one of your photos with a creative commons license has been short-listed for inclusion in our Schmap Hobart Guide, to be published mid-November 2006. www.schmap.com/shortlist/p=38647896N00/c=SC5006536

Clicking this link will take you to a page where you can:
i) See which of your photos has been short-listed.
ii) Submit or withdraw your photo from our final selection phase.
iii) Learn how we credit photos in our Schmap Guides.
iv) Download one of our recently released Schmap Guides.

Our submission deadline is Friday, October 20. If you happen to be reading this message after this date, please still click on the link above (our Schmap destination guides are updated frequently – photos submitted after this deadline will be considered for later releases).

Best regards,

Ali Moss,
Managing Editor, Schmap Guides

This is an obvious thing to do, and I’ve no idea if the photo got used or not, but I am impressed that they bothered to contact me – particularly as they point out at their site that some regard their reuse as commercial as while the guide is free they are generating an income via advertising. (Yes, I would regard this as a commercial reuse of the content.)
