Someone I work with, L. mentioned over our work Christmas lunch that she didn’t believe in New Year’s Resolutions, instead she opted for the New Year’s theme. This turns out to a general theme that you choose to help define or think about your year. So I’ve thought I might give it a go (does that count as a resolution then?). My theme is “finishing”, though hopefully by December it will look more like:
FINISHING
FINISHED
Why? Because I’m brilliant at starting things, very poor at finishing them. However, I love the feeling of finishing and crossing things off the list. And I’ve got a list of things that just haven’t been finished properly. Conference papers that should become essays, half finished essays, projects.
I am not sure how to make this happen (I sort of know, but since finishing is really my weakest thing I really are not clear how to achieve ‘finishing’. So, first rule of finishing, do not say yes to any new requests or call for papers (unless a) they allow me to reuse existing content, b) they will not add to my work load, c) they let me contribute to something (ie invitations are OK to accept) or d) are just very very good opportunities). Second rule, I must spend time every work day on task or tasks that are about finishing outstanding stuff. I think that might be a good start.
