vog (a BETA videoblog)

Wednesday Melbourne
created: 20 December 2000

Filmed from Fløyen which is one of the seven mountains that surrounds Bergen. A key and popular landmark, with a funicular up the side. I used to ride a mountain bike up the walking trails regularly, which while often wet was always very beautiful. This is deliberately a low bit rate movie where the frame rate is deliberately slowed, and also the soundtrack has been stretched so that a) you can't recognise the original and b) because I was interested in thinking about stretching things. This is also the case with the dimensions as the original aspect ratio has been broken so it is wider than it should actually be. The work is deliberately situated within the history of city films (though it is only 2 minutes 12 seconds long) so is poetic, abstract, and is also about some of the main fragments that made up my memory of Bergen for me. The material, while shot in Bergen, was put together back in Melbourne.

From the original blog post:

vogs are epistolatory and vernacular. a videonacular? (but neologisms are the last refuge of those evacuated of ideas.)
