vog (a BETA videoblog)

Welcome
created: 27 November 2000

This was the first video blog post I ever made. I could have made it bigger, faster, after I all made this while in a university on the west coast of Norway which had plenty of bandwidth. But I have always been interested in video that is web specific - so full screen full rez just doesn't fit that model - but I also wanted it to work for people who were not sitting in a first world university.

For republication here I've left the original video as is but doubled it when shown on screen. However, when originally published, this was visually half of this size (and my screen resolution would have been pretty much half of what it is now too.)

Technically this uses a QuickTime text track with HREF's. Text tracks are literally strings of text stored inside QuickTime (it is not rendered into the movie) and so appears differently on Macs and PCs as different fonts and screen resolutions happen. The HREF element in the text track is a clickable text link. I used a text track because it adds nothing to the file size (it's just a bit of ascii), but also because it lets a movie have links out to the web really easily. From day one I wanted video to talk out.

The image (which is a still image track not video) is towards Ulriken in Bergen from outside where my office was at the University of Bergen.
