Lugano Variation Two
created: 4 October 2004

Same footage and commentary as for Lugano Variation One. Same structure, mousing in to any of the three video panes toggles its soundtrack to be on, mousing out and the soundtrack is now mute. These, unlike many of my other projects, are not child movies. Each of the videos (and soundtracks) are all combined into a single QuickTime file. This iteration of the material returns to a more usual layout, where the horizontal is wider and longer than the vertical. This sort of appeals, the first version reads more like a video 'list' whereas this seems to be more like about relations between each of the videos. It seems a minor point, and I'm not that certain about what I mean, but the first version is like this, then this, then this (a list that itemises), whereas putting them alongside each other, as in this one, is more like and this, and this, and this.

I didn't want to use child movies because around this time I wanted work that could actually survive a RSS feed (more complex video objects cannot work within the RSS model since RSS assumes video to be a single video container, it can't cope with something more like a web page where there may be a video that loads and requires other, external video files). I was also interested in video works that were just multiple tracks, where mousing in did simple things, without worrying about loading external videos and playing around with playstate, play speed and the like. Here it is simple, there are three videos, they appear at different times, they are separate as each has its own soundtrack. You can listen to each, if you wish. There is also a third variation of this work.
