We had an early hot spell in November and I was sitting in the back yard at dusk enjoying the light in the trees. The colours had that southern Australian dry warmth to them that bristles with austerity. We are about 5 kilometres from the centre of the city, but around me amongst the wattle birds, crows and garden gum trees were the sounds of all our little families. Sprawling in the heat.
