This essay is based on a paper that was a hypertext that, in turn, developed out of an ongoing project which was, very basically, a close reading of 5 minutes of Singin in the Rain . This film project was written as a Storyspace hypertext, and published as a HTML based essay. What follows is more or less the paper as delivered, including its redundancies and repetitions.
What I want to briefly sketch here is a place for a text driven, low technology approach to new media and screen culture, a sort of pragmatics, that is as much about having the room in which to make mistakes as about certainties.
This paper will be partly a series of wannabe aphorisms about what I suppose should be called digital culture and screen culture.
