Resnais studied at Paris's Institut des hautes études cinématographiques (IDHEC) and began his directing career as a documentary maker. While firmly recognised as a leading member of the New Wave Resnais is older than most of its members (Truffaut, Godard, Chabrol, Rivette, et al) and is also associated with what Roud has characterised as the 'left-bank New Wave'. Resnais's oeuvre is usually understand to comprise an exploration of time and memory and so offers an often difficult exploration of narrative temporality.
