(1969) Perhaps best known as Godard's cinematographer Coutard fully understood the possibilities
and advantages of the new camera technologies of the late 50s and early
60s. With lightweight hand held cameras and fast stock he was able to
shoot on the street as the New Wave so deliciously explored and
experimented with the possibilities of a whole new cinematic practice.
It is perhaps this willingness to eschew traditional practices (that of
course also marks the New Wave in general) that is Coutard's lasting
influence as a generation of filmmakers took movies out of the studios
and into the world. References
